just like any other day i was sitting in my chair, at my desk, browsing the web in firefox, listening to music via itunes and checking my email and various rss feeds in thunderbird. then i suddenly got inspired. i was flicking through my watched artists over on
deviantart when all of a sudden, a piece of genius kicked me in the head. it was an idea for a t-shirt design, very simple, easily done in photoshop. i clicked the infamous blue and green feather and no less then 5 minutes later, the damn thing opened up! 5 minutes my mac was incapacitated. i've got important things to look at on the internet, you know? so then another stroke of genius struck me. after photoshop decided it had loaded all it needed, i moved the pointer over to the apple and checked to see if it were possible to upgrade the ram. 1gb jut isn't enough these days. good. there's a spare slot just waiting to be penetrated with a glistening new stick of ram. a quick google later and i also discovered that it would take a 2gb stick but no more, due to macbook pro's only being able to recognize up to 3gb. no problems, i'll head on down to trash and treasure and see what i can find.
a few minutes of local and international searches later, nothing. so, back to google. after some more searching i found about 6 sites that i trusted all of which accepted paypal, all of which contending for my money. now, i have a paypal account. but not one with a credit card attached. one of the even more dangerous variety. a paypal account set up with my bank account. i find the ram i want, 2gb ddr2 sodimm 200pin dr5300 667mhz, simple. some of these sites even have comment sections for previous purchasers to leave reviews on their latest acquisition. i go for one with the ravest of reviews. and wouldn't you know it, the site wants me to make the purchase with a credit carded payapl account! so do the 5 other damn sites. so i put my search on hiatus.
the next day i was back into photoshop and just couldn't stand how long it was taking for everything to come together. so, back to ebay. all it took this time was a local search, and what do you know, theres a stick just like the one i was ogling the day prior up in sydney for the low low price of $119. i snatched it up so quick my bank account didn't have time to update until the next day. the ram was sent express, as it was the main player in such a dire game of technology. it arrived a few days later. i ripped the protective packaging that seemed adamant to consume the box inside. with hands possessed by excitement i managed to open the box. newspaper, shredded. had i been duped? of course not. the ram was sitting contently at the bottom enshrouded again in one last protective layer. and to my surprise they had throne in a couple of complimentary chocolates as well. solid and thin, but with a fresh minty finish.
so as quickly as i had opened the box i had flipped my mac over, removed the battery, unscrewed the cover to the ram bay and was confronted with another dilema. i couldn't remember how to slot the ram in. i've done it before in many different machines, but never a laptop. never a macintosh laptop. i did have instructions though. albeit they were on the mac and i couldn't really be bothered turning the mac on until the ram was safely secured into its new home. so, like a monkey fishing for ants with a stick i figured out how to pop the ram out and back in again. the ram was in, the cover on and the battery replaced. i booted it up. i checked 'about this mac' once again and there it was, 3gb of ddr2 sodimm 200pin dr5300 667mhz ram.
now for the test. i opened up thunderbird, then firefox, thirdly itunes and last of all photoshop. i clicked them all one after the other as fast as possible. test it proparly. within a minute they were all up. emails sounding off, home pages loading, music blearing and brush palettes were being defined! success! so after all that, all i wanted to do was a simple little design, and here it is.
